Emphysema will worsen in a few years if you don’t stop smoking and drinking.

Emphysema without quitting smoking and drinking symptoms may worsen in the short term or develop in the long term, but there is no specific data, it is recommended to quit smoking and drinking for treatment.
1. Emphysema may worsen year by year as the years go by, and the condition needs to be judged according to the lung function. Emphysema may be asymptomatic in the early stage, but as it develops, symptoms such as chest tightness, shortness of breath, cough and sputum may appear, and may even cause serious complications such as spontaneous pneumothorax, rupture of alveoli and chronic pulmonary heart disease, which are usually difficult to treat.
2. Emphysema generally requires lifelong treatment, and it is recommended to stop smoking and drinking. Bronchodilators, such as aminophylline and β2 agonists, can be used for those who present with significant obstructive pulmonary ventilation dysfunction. For single pulmonary herpes or limited pulmonary herpes, pulmonary herpetic resection and lung volume reduction may be considered.
When emphysema is detected, it is recommended to quit smoking and alcohol immediately, and follow up with regular specialty review.
