Should I get an artificial joint replacement for arthritis?

In clinical practice, one of the most frequently asked questions from patients is “how many years can the artificial joint last? In some patients, even some doctors persuade patients to give up surgical treatment on the grounds that it will cost them money, they will suffer, and they will not be able to get rid of the problem once and for all. For example, in a patient with rheumatoid arthritis who has been completely bedridden for 8 years and was 35 years old at the time of admission, all joints of the body were involved, especially both hips, knees and feet were severely damaged. For such a patient, it is not only a burden for the family and society, but also the long-term psychological pressure and pain have made him lose his courage to live. The patient’s osteoporosis is very serious and his general condition is not ideal, but after the artificial joint replacement, the patient can stand and walk again, and can basically perform daily activities and partially resume his previous work. It can be said that we already knew before the operation that the long-term outcome of such a heavy patient would not be very good and that complications such as loosening of the prosthesis would occur sooner or later, but at the same time, we also thought that it was very meaningful to create a life close to normal for such a patient for several years. It is totally worth it. What is the value of life for a patient who is completely bedridden and has lost his confidence in life if he continues conservative treatment, even if he lives to the age of 100? If the patient is allowed to lie down until the age of 60 to reduce the number of operations, how much more meaningful is the operation? This is actually a question of cost to benefit ratio. In the future, 10 to 20 years later, even if there is a problem with the artificial joint, it can be refurbished. In addition, with social development and technological progress, we have every reason to believe that by that time, artificial joint technology will be even better.
