What is herpes zoster neuralgia

Herpes zoster is associated with neuralgia before the onset of the rash, during the onset of the rash, and after the lesions have resolved, collectively referred to as ZAP (herpes zoster associated pain). If the neuralgia persists after the lesions have resolved (usually after 4 weeks), it is called postherpetic neuralgia. According to the nature of pain and clinical manifestations, it can be classified as agitated tenderness type, paralytic pain type, and centrally integrated pain type. The main clinical manifestations are: 1. persistent or episodic severe pain in the affected area 1 month after clinical cure of herpes; obvious pigmentation changes are visible within the affected area. 2. Most patients are characterized by hypersensitivity to nociceptive sensation, which can produce severe and unbearable pain with gentle touch; some patients are characterized by hypoesthesia to superficial sensation and obvious tenderness. 3. The nature of pain is mainly spontaneous slash-like or lightning-like attack pain or persistent burning pain, and most patients have severe and unbearable pain. Very few patients lack the typical neuralgia. 4. Due to the fear of severe pain, patients are psychologically burdened, depressed, and even lose confidence in life and have suicidal tendencies, which should be given special attention. In summary, herpes zoster neuralgia will not only lead to depression and loss of quality of life, but also reduce or even lose the ability to work and socialize.
