Taking astragalus with yin-nourishing medicines usually does not counteract each other’s effects. Note that the drug should be used under the guidance of a doctor. Astragalus, has the effects of strengthening the spleen and tonifying the middle, elevating yang and lifting the sun (raising the yang qi of the organism to lift the sunken organs), and generating fluids and nourishing blood (replenishing the body’s fluids and blood). It is used in treating qi deficiency and weakness, loose stools (scanty and unformed feces), sinking of the middle qi (deficiency of the spleen and stomach qi, with manifestations such as sagging of the internal organs), prolonged diarrhea and prolapse of the anus, and blood in the stools and leakage of blood (excessive menstruation or dripping of menstruation). For patients with deficiency of both qi and yin (deficiency of both qi and yin), astragalus can be paired with yin-nourishing medicines, such as maitong, shengdi, tiandong, and yuzhu. If medication is needed, it should be diagnosed by a doctor and standardized according to the doctor’s prescription.
