Carotid artery intimal undersmoothness belongs to the vascular ultrasound terminology and is pathologically known as the early manifestation of carotid atherosclerosis, which is categorized into general and pharmacologic treatments depending on the degree of severity.
Carotid atherosclerosis is progressive and is divided into asymptomatic and insidious stage, ischemic stage, necrotic stage and fibrotic stage. The carotid artery lumen is not smooth in the early stage of carotid atherosclerosis, and there is no intraplaque hemorrhage, thrombosis, plaque rupture, or aneurysm formation.
Treatment of early carotid atherosclerosis mainly includes actively controlling risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, reducing the intake of cholesterol, alcohol and sugary foods, and participating in appropriate physical activities.
If the risk of causing stenosis or bleeding is considered, statin lipid regulators (atorvastatin, resuvastatin, etc.) and antiplatelet aggregating drugs (aspirin, clopidogrel, etc.) can be used as prescribed by the doctor.
Carotid artery intima-media undersmoothness should be promptly consulted and actively treated under the guidance of a doctor to avoid serious consequences of the progression of the disease.
