Eczema around the belly button is often seen in people who are allergic to metals, especially nickel or chromium. These people tend to wear jeans, which have metal buckles that are common allergens, as well as belt buckles. Eczema around the belly button most commonly occurs during the summer months, when these metals come into direct contact with the skin due to less clothing being worn. Sweating and other causes lead to metal precipitation, which in turn leads to eczema-like changes around the belly button. At present, the main symptomatic treatment is oral anti-allergic drugs, such as loratadine or cetirizine tablets, and topical denadyl cream or compound flumethasone ointment for symptomatic treatment. Most importantly, patients should remove the suspected cause of allergy.
