High BNP does not necessarily mean heart failure, but BNP in patients with heart failure must be higher than normal. Elevated BNP can also be seen in pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary embolism, atrial fibrillation, renal insufficiency and other diseases. BNP is called B-type brain natriuretic peptide, a diuretic natriuretic peptide secreted by the heart. When the ventricular filling pressure increases or the tension of the ventricular wall increases, BNP secretion increases, and because patients with heart failure have ventricular dilatation, patients with heart failure can have elevated BNP levels. In addition, patients with atrial fibrillation have increased ventricular volume load and increased ventricular wall tension, which can also lead to increased BNP levels; patients with pulmonary hypertension and pulmonary embolism have increased BNP levels due to increased ventricular wall tension in the right heart; and patients with renal insufficiency have decreased metabolism, which can lead to increased BNP levels. If BNP levels are found to be elevated, please follow the doctor’s instructions to improve the relevant examinations and treatment.
