What does atherosclerosis mean?

Atherosclerosis is a common disease in cardiovascular diseases, and is also a high-risk factor for coronary heart disease, cerebral thrombosis, cerebral embolism, and cerebral infarction. Atherosclerosis is mainly due to damage to the intima of arteries and the formation of plaque-like material due to the deposition of lipids in the intima, local tissue necrosis and softening, forming a rice-like substance that is deposited on the surface of the intima, hence the name atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis can lead to narrowing of the lumen of blood vessels and even localized blood supply deficiency or tissue necrosis, so early intervention and treatment is necessary. There are many causes of atherosclerosis, mainly due to abnormal lipid metabolism. Other risk factors, such as smoking, tend to damage the vascular endothelium, or hypertension, diabetes, etc. Therefore, it is necessary to develop good living and eating habits, control the risk factors, and take lipid-lowering and anti-platelet aggregation drugs for treatment if necessary.
