Chinese medicine believes that esophagitis belongs to the category of “hiccups” and “choking and diaphragm”, and that liver qi stagnation (poor transportation of qi and blood in the liver and depression) is one of the reasons for the occurrence of hiccups and choking and diaphragm, so the two may be related, but not absolutely. Therefore, the two may have some relationship, but it is not absolute.
Chinese medicine believes that the disease of esophageal diseases is located in the esophagus, while the pathology is in the spleen and stomach. If the patient’s emotions and feelings are not smooth, depression and anger, qi depression injures the liver, the liver loses detachment (the liver’s function of detachment is abnormal), and transverse reversal offends the stomach (the liver’s qi is not smooth so that it violates the stomach’s function), resulting in gastric qi upward reversal (the stomach’s qi rises instead of descends), i.e., the evidence of Liver-Stomach Dissonance (the disharmony of the liver’s ascending and the stomach’s descending functions).
Common symptoms of Liver-Stomach disharmony include emotional depression, nausea, vomiting, eructation, acid swallowing (swallowing acid from the stomach that rushes upward to the mouth and throat), lack of desire for food, and distension and pain in the stomach, epigastrium, and hypochondrium. Its main treatment is to harmonize the Stomach and lower the rebellious Qi (harmonize the Stomach Qi to bring down the upwardly rebellious Qi).
It should be noted that although liver qi stagnation may have a certain relationship with esophagitis, but it is not absolute, if you suffer from esophagitis, you should also go to the hospital in a timely manner, and cooperate with the doctor’s consultation and examination to clarify the specific causes of the disease, do not blindly guess on your own, to avoid missing the best time for treatment.
In addition, patients with esophagitis should pay attention to the daily diet, not too stimulating, and need to have a good mood.
