Before a couple is ready to get pregnant, they need to undergo a preconception test, which can be done at a reproductive unit. If the hospital does not have a reproductive unit, women can go to the obstetrics and gynecology department, and men can go to the urology or male department. Basic examinations for both couples, including height, weight, blood pressure and physical examinations of lymph nodes, thyroid, heart, spine and limbs are necessary, while routine blood tests, blood sugar, blood lipids, blood type, infectious diseases (such as hepatitis B, AIDS, syphilis, etc.), thyroid function, liver function, kidney function, urine routine, electrocardiogram, abdominal ultrasound, etc. are also necessary. In addition, men need to be examined for reproductive organs and semen quality to exclude diseases of the reproductive system such as orchitis, urethritis, and oligospermia, weak sperm, etc. Women need to undergo gynecological examinations such as routine white belt examination, vaginal examination, cervical fluid-based cytology examination, sex hormone level measurement and breast ultrasound. 3-6 months before conception is a better time for pregnancy tests to scientifically assess the couple’s physical status. Couples are forbidden to have intercourse within 3-5 days before the preconception test, they should take a shower 1 day before the physical examination, but women should be careful not to wash their vagina and keep an empty stomach after 12 pm 1 day before the examination to avoid inaccurate test results. Couples are advised to stop smoking and drinking during the 3-6 months of planned pregnancy to improve the success rate of conception as well as the quality of fertilized eggs and embryos.
