Can tacrolimus ointment be used for a long time?

Tacrolimus Ointment is used primarily for the treatment of moderate to severe atopic dermatitis and may be used as a short-term or intermittent long-term treatment, not for long-term continuous use. The safety of tacrolimus ointment is not known. Very few people have developed cancer, such as skin cancer or lymphoma, after application, but there is insufficient evidence to link this to tacrolimus ointment. Because of this, care should be taken not to apply it continuously over a long period of time. Tacrolimus ointment should be applied only to the area of skin affected by eczema, not to children under two years of age, and should be used for short periods of time and repeated intermittently if necessary. Care should be taken not to bathe, shower or swim just after the application of Tacrolimus Ointment as this may wash off the medication, and if a moisturizer is used, it can be used together with Tacrolimus Ointment.
