Diet and exercise are the main treatment modalities, supplemented by medication or surgery if necessary.
Medication mainly includes orlistat capsules, an intestinal lipase inhibitor class, and glucose-lowering drugs that also have a weight-reducing effect (e.g. metformin and liraglutide), but as metformin and liraglutide are not yet indicated for weight reduction in China, they must be used under the guidance of a physician.
Surgical treatment mainly includes liposuction, lipotomy and various procedures to reduce food absorption, but surgical treatment may cause malnutrition, anaemia and narrowing of the digestive tract, so the indications for surgery need to be strictly controlled.
