Corneal degeneration is due to certain diseases that cause degenerative lesions and diminished function of corneal tissue. The main causes of corneal degeneration are inflammation, and others not related to immunity. The common corneal degenerations are corneal senile rings, banded keratopathy, limbal keratopathy, corneal lipid degeneration and large vesicular keratopathy. In terms of treatment, the main focus is on the cause of the disease. If it is caused by normal aging, no treatment is needed, like corneal senile rings. Other degenerations may be treated with medication, which can be effective in mild cases, with edetate disodium or with nutritive drugs. However, as the lesion worsens with age, these medications will not be effective and eventually a corneal transplant or corneal endothelial transplant may be done to resolve the problem.
