Can I still eat by mouth if I have a stomach tube?

Normally you can’t eat by mouth with a gastric tube in place. The main reasons for gastric tube insertion are inability to eat on their own or inability to eat diseases, such as coma, consciousness disorder, poisoning, stomach and esophagus after surgery. After gastric tube is inserted, the gastric tube usually passes through the nasopharynx to enter the esophagus, which will also have some effect on the swallowing function, and the presence of the gastric tube will also affect the entry of food into the esophagus, so that the patient’s food will be sprayed out from the mouth and nose when eating through the mouth. In the above situation, it is impossible to occlude the mouth of the trachea when eating, therefore, if eating through the mouth, it is very likely that the food will be discharged into the trachea causing choking and coughing, which may lead to choking in severe cases. Therefore, gastrostomy tube should not be inserted through the mouth, and if there is any abnormality, it is recommended to consult the relevant doctor.
