3. Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome: a severe skin infection caused by coagulase-positive Staphylococcus aureus, which produces a relaxant toxin that causes the skin to loosen, resulting in erythema all over the body, followed by oozing, crusting, and thus flaking. Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome is extremely dangerous for newborns, and the severity of the desquamation may be life-threatening.
If the symptoms are mild, the newborn can be observed, but if they are severe, immediate hospitalization is recommended.
