Coughing is a symptom that manifests itself in diseases. There are many causes of coughing, and different causes of coughing can manifest themselves differently. First, a cough can be an irritating choking cough; another type of cough is a dry cough, commonly caused by allergies from various causes. There is also a wet cough, which is a cough with phlegm, and older children sometimes cough up the phlegm. There are many causes of a wet cough, the most common being infections such as bacterial, viral and mycoplasma infections. The most common causes for children are infections, such as various viruses and bacteria, followed by allergies and irritation from chemicals or physical factors, such as inhaling dust. This is due to irritation of the airway, such as stimulation by polluted air, haze, and chemicals; irritating choking cough due to inhalation of foreign objects into the trachea accidentally while eating, for example; cold, sudden climate change, and rain, which can lower the local defense function of the child’s respiratory tract to induce coughing; or exposure to patients carrying pathogens in public places such as schools, where the disease is induced by sneezing, polluted hands, and air. Moreover, children are weaker and have lower resistance, and are also prone to recurrent coughing. Cough caused by GERD is common in younger children. The child’s lower esophageal sphincter does not function well, and the stomach contents may reflux into the esophagus and also enter the trachea in small amounts, causing a cough. In addition, cough variant asthma is a special type of asthma in which coughing is the only symptom of the disease and has to be treated in the same way as asthma. Older children may also develop a psychogenic cough, which is related to the child’s psychology and used to be called a habitual cough.
