Lung-heat cough is a concept in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is a symptom of coughing due to heat in the lungs and loss of lung qi. Lung-heat cough can occur with respiratory infections, bronchitis, and other respiratory conditions. Lung-heat cough is mainly characterized by coughing, yellow sputum, dry mouth, sore throat, constipation, and fever. According to Chinese medicine, the first thing you should do is to give your child plenty of water, a light diet that is easy to digest, no fatty foods, no fish or meat, and plenty of vitamin-rich fruits and vegetables, including cabbage and greens, to reduce your baby’s lung heat. You can eat cool fruits, such as pears, Luo Han Guo, etc. You can choose drugs to clear the lung heat and phlegm, such as oral liquid for children with lung heat and cough, cough orange red punch, etc. From a Western medical point of view, upper respiratory tract infections, bronchitis and bronchiectasis can all manifest a lung-heat cough, so the treatment plan must be handled according to the severity of the child’s illness, and if there is a bacterial infection, antibiotics are also needed. Lung-heat cough is a TCM concept, and TCM believes that it must start with diet control, while the Western view requires a treatment plan according to the severity of the disease.
