What are the early symptoms of laryngeal cancer? Laryngeal cancer is a malignant tumor that originates from the epithelial tissue of the larynx mucosa. It is mostly found in middle-aged and elderly men. The occurrence of this cancer is related to smoking, alcoholism, long-term inhalation of harmful substances and papilloma virus infection. Generally laryngeal cancer patients, the first thing that affects a person is the occurrence of speech, early detection, early cure, and high curability. 1. Stubborn hoarseness of voice Hoarseness is the earliest signal of laryngeal cancer. Laryngeal cancer is a tumor growing on the vocal cords, even if the volume is small, hoarseness will occur. Any adult with unexplained hoarseness that lasts for more than two weeks should have a detailed laryngeal examination and should not be taken lightly. Because there is no pain or itching at this time, patients often mistake it for “cold” or “laryngitis”. However, the hoarseness caused by cold and inflammation will improve quickly as the inflammation subsides, while the hoarseness caused by laryngeal cancer will be progressively aggravated and gradually develop into thickening and mute voice until complete loss of voice. 2. Abnormal sensation of throat Foreign body sensation, urgency or swallowing discomfort are early symptoms of supraglottic laryngeal cancer. However, the symptoms of this type of cancer are often not obvious at the beginning and are not detected until the second or third stage, and the medical history can be traced for several months. Therefore, if middle-aged and elderly people have throat discomfort, they should have a comprehensive and detailed examination, and should not be treated hastily as pharyngeal heterosensitivity or chronic pharyngitis, thus missing the valuable treatment time. 3.Cough with blood in sputum Because of tumor stimulation, it can produce irritating dry cough and blood in sputum, and patients often have the feeling of mucus adhesion, so they often “wash their throat”. After the tumor enlarges, it will also block the airway and make the airway secretion discharge poorly, causing respiratory tract infection, wheezing and even difficulty in breathing, and in the middle and late stages, it will manifest as persistent cough and change in pronunciation. 4.Reflex pain sensation When laryngeal cancer is combined with ulcer, inflammation or laryngeal cartilage osteochondritis, it can cause reflex pain of nerve, which is manifested as ipsilateral headache and ear pain. These symptoms mainly appear in patients with supraglottic type tumor. 5.Pre-cancerous lesion Vocal cord polyps sometimes may cause hoarseness, and a few of them may also cause cancer. Therefore, it is better to remove vocal fold polyps by surgery as early as possible, and those who are not suitable for surgery should be followed up regularly. Some laryngeal diseases such as laryngeal thick skin disease, laryngeal mucosal leukoplakia and laryngeal papilloma may also become cancerous, which is called “precancerous lesions” and must be followed up regularly just in case.
