Lipoic acid needs to be used for about 2-4 weeks to work. Lipoic acid is indicated for sensory abnormalities caused by diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Peripheral neuropathy is a chronic condition that requires long-term use to see results. A course of treatment is usually 2 to 4 weeks, and in some patients it can work after one course of treatment. For better results, lipoic acid needs to be taken for at least 2 to 3 months, or even for a long period of time. Major adverse reactions include musculoskeletal side effects such as convulsions, and bleeding tendencies due to abnormal platelet function. A small number of patients may develop diarrhea. Some users experience systemic allergic reactions such as urticaria, eczema, and in severe cases, anaphylaxis. This product is prohibited for those who are allergic to the product, newborns, pregnant women during pregnancy, as well as breastfeeding women. While taking lipoic acid, follow up regularly to assess the extent of peripheral neuropathy, and continue or adjust the medication regimen as prescribed.
