【Case】The author saw a middle-aged male patient in February 2013. The patient had undergone hepatocellular carcinoma resection in our hospital surgery 1 month ago and came to our department after surgery to be seen by the author. In order to prevent recurrence, the author developed comprehensive measures: (1) insisting on lamivudine tablets to control hepatitis B virus, one tablet per day without interruption. (2) To give hepatic artery cannulation chemoembolization (TACE for short) to destroy potential microscopic cancer cells. (3) Chinese herbal medicine improves the body environment and liver environment to make it unsuitable for cancer cell growth and metastasis; Chinese herbal medicine can also improve immunity and induce cancer cell differentiation to reduce malignancy. The Chinese herbal treatment plan is: hepatofluox capsule combined with herbal medicine, which is prescribed by the author according to the observation and diagnosis. (4) Adhering to exercise, strictly following the dietary guidelines for liver cancer, mind regulation and changing bad habits. (5) Regular review, including blood sampling and ultrasound examination of the liver. The patient strictly implemented. The recent follow-up visit revealed that the patient had no discomfort, good control of hepatitis B virus, and no signs of cancer recurrence and metastasis were detected. According to the information provided by the patient’s family: some of the patients who operated at the same time as the patient did not insist on taking traditional Chinese medicine and some did not change their past bad habits, as a result, the cancer cells all recurred in a short period of time. 【Analysis】 (1) Curing a disease is like fighting a war, and cancer cells are like enemies. Surgery has cut off the visible cancer mass, and the remaining invisible cancer cells are very few in number, just like stragglers, which is when the enemy is weakest. If we are negligent and do not treat the cancer cells after surgery, it will be difficult to treat the cancer cells after they have formed again or metastasized, and it will be difficult to cure them. (2) Cancer cells are not ordinary enemies, but special forces among enemies, with strong vitality, which are difficult to be completely driven out and killed, so comprehensive measures must be taken. Combination of Chinese medicine and Western medicine, combination of pharmacotherapy and food therapy, combination of local treatment and systemic treatment, psychological adjustment, exercise and daily living should be used, that is, all the 18 weapons should be used to intervene in cancer cells in all aspects, multiple ways and multiple levels to make it difficult for them to develop. We cannot be afraid of trouble and use only one or two of these methods or measures, which will reduce the probability of overcoming cancer cells. (3) Cancer is a stubborn disease that requires long-term treatment. One cannot stop the medicine privately after taking it for several months and feeling good, the struggle with cancer cells cannot be stopped. Once the patient relaxes and interrupts the medicine, or interrupts the food therapy, or interrupts the exercise, the cancer cells will run ahead and recur or metastasize, with unimaginable consequences.
