What causes pain at the base of the ear

When a patient experiences pain in the base of the ear, it may be a sign of acute inflammation of the deep part of the ear canal, as well as the eardrum, with congestion and swelling. This condition can often be associated with excessive force and deep ear digging, repeated water ingress into the ear, and in some cases, acute inflammatory infectious conditions of the respiratory tract. Inflammatory factors entering the middle ear cavity retrogradely through the eustachian tube can cause an acute inflammatory condition in the middle ear, resulting in a significant painful sensation at the base of the ear. Some patients may experience paroxysmal neuralgia at the base of the ear, which may be related to the patient’s recent excessive mental stress, anxiety, or lack of sleep, repeated fatigue, staying up late, etc. Patients need further detailed examination to clarify the cause.
