MILES Trial Introduction: The MILES trial is an acronym for the International Multicenter Sirolimus (rapamycin) Efficacy Trial for LAM. It is a collaborative trial organized by the Rare Diseases Society (a multicenter group funded by the National Institutes of Health). This trial was arranged as a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind application of sirolimus for the treatment of patients with LAM. Randomized means that patient assignment is decided like a coin toss; placebo-controlled means that some patients take a non-drug “sugar pill”; and double-blind means that neither the physician nor the patient knows who is taking what. This is a study design that has been proven to eliminate bias. The trial is planned to enroll 60 patients in the placebo and treatment groups, respectively. Patient conditions for enrollment: must sign informed consent, abnormal lung function.
