Shijingshan Hospital Spine Surgery Department successfully performed the first discoscopic surgery in our hospital using minimally invasive techniques. The patient is now recovering well and has been successfully discharged from the hospital. This surgery marks a new step in minimally invasive spine technology in our orthopedic department. Ms. Xiao, 55, has been suffering from back and leg pain for more than 2 years. The pain in her waist and lower extremities was recurrent, aggravated by activities and weather changes, and relieved by bed rest. Recently, her right foot and lower leg became numb and weak, and she had difficulty walking. The patient was diagnosed with lumbar disc herniation and was promptly treated with discoscopic surgery, after which her back and leg pain improved significantly and she was discharged with satisfaction. Lumbar disc herniation is extremely common, with a large patient population and many patients requiring surgery, but many patients are afraid of open surgery. Minimally invasive posterior discoscopy (MED for short) surgery is based on the same principles as traditional lumbar disc surgery, allowing access to the spinal canal and direct removal of the herniated disc that is compressing the nerve roots. Compared to traditional surgery, however, the incision is small and minimally invasive, eliminating the need to cut and separate muscles, and the postoperative recovery is quick, requiring only 2-3 days of bed rest. Because there is little damage to the spinal structure, postoperative spinal stability is good, while preserving the mobility of the lumbar spine. Posterior discoscopic surgery not only has the above-mentioned advantages of minimally invasive, but also has the advantages of high safety, short operation and hospitalization time, good results, and low overall medical costs. The success of this operation will play a leading role in the popularization and promotion of minimally invasive treatment technology for lumbar disc herniation in Shijingshan and the surrounding areas. Undoubtedly, the development of discoscopic surgery in our hospital has brought a blessing to the majority of patients with lumbar spine diseases.
