Cost of cataract treatment

The cost of cataract surgery varies from region to region, from hospital to hospital, and from surgery to surgery using different consumables. For example, cataract surgery costs include: various pre-surgery and post-surgery examinations and treatment costs; surgery costs on the day of surgery and costs related to intraoperative instruments, apparatus and air purification in the operating room; intraoperative IOL and other materials and consumables; perioperative medicine costs; and hospitalization-related costs.

In Beijing’s tertiary care hospitals, for example, the surgical instruments and apparatus used during surgery are all imported products, and the implanted IOL is an original imported product: 1. All of them are proportionally reimbursed by medical insurance and public medical treatment.

2.Surgery fee and intraoperative instruments, air purification in the operating room, etc. on the day of surgery: about RMB 1100 for surgery, plus 30% for special difficult cases; other intraoperative fees total RMB 300-500.

3. Intraoperative IOL and other materials and consumables costs: this is the major cost of surgery and the main source of out-of-pocket expenses. Intraoperative consumables include viscoelastic, irrigation solution, etc., about 300-800 RMB, of which 180 RMB is reimbursed for viscoelastic and the difference is self-financed; IOL cost: the cost of different IOLs varies greatly. The commonly used imported folding aspheric design IOLs for ultrasound mammography are about RMB 2500-5800, and adjustable, multifocal IOLs are RMB 7000 or more; IOL reimbursement in Beijing is currently RMB 1216, and the difference is self-funded.

4.Perioperative medication cost: about 100-300 RMB.

5. Hospitalization-related expenses: bed, air conditioning, nursing care, etc., about 1000 RMB, about 80-90% reimbursement.

In summary, if an imported aspheric monofocal folding IOL is implanted, the total combined cost is about $8-9,000, with reimbursement of about 1/3-1/2. Each of the above specific charges are the uniform charges of the Beijing Price Bureau. The above fees do not include the cost of treating surgical comorbidities and treating related eye diseases at the same time.

Reminder: Most of the patients with foreign medical insurance need to be hospitalized in order to be partially reimbursed.
