What to do without surgery for gallbladder stones

Gallbladder stones that do not require surgery as judged by the clinician can be observed and followed up. The causes of gallbladder stones are very complex. Most patients are asymptomatic, while a few may have symptoms such as biliary colic, abdominal pain, jaundice with nausea and vomiting. For children with gallbladder stones and asymptomatic adults with gallbladder stones, cholecystectomy is usually not necessary and can be observed and followed up. Surgery is preferred for patients with symptoms and/or complications. Surgery is recommended for patients with the following conditions: gallbladder stones in large number and diameter >2~3cm; calcification of the gallbladder wall; accompanied by gallbladder polyps not less than 1cm; thickening of the gallbladder wall (>3mm). Patients with gallbladder stones are advised to choose the treatment under the guidance of specialized physicians.
