Misoprostol can be either taken orally or inserted into the vagina. Misoprostol is mainly used for early termination of pregnancy, between 5-7 weeks of pregnancy by taking mifepristone, and then misoprostol is given orally mainly to promote uterine contraction to expel the embryo from the uterus for the purpose of terminating the pregnancy. Misoprostol is inserted into the posterior vaginal fornix for the following purposes: 1) to soften the cervix when the cervix is found to be hard during IUD removal; 2) to terminate a relatively large pregnancy that cannot be aborted and can only be terminated by inserting misoprostol to promote uterine contraction and expulsion of the pregnancy products and then giving painless uterine evacuation; 3) also for poor uterine regeneration or in the postpartum period. If you have poor uterine regeneration and more bleeding after an abortion, you can take misoprostol for treatment.
