Are constipation remedies real?

The claim of “constipation remedies” is not true. The treatment of constipation mainly takes drug therapy, such as laxatives, gastrointestinal stimulants and so on, but also can take biofeedback therapy, surgical treatment and other ways.

1. Laxatives: by stimulating intestinal secretion and reducing absorption, increase the osmotic pressure in the intestinal lumen and hydrostatic pressure to play the role of diarrhea. They are generally divided into stimulating laxatives, such as rhubarb, salt laxatives, such as magnesium sulfate, osmotic laxatives, such as lactulose, lubricating laxatives, such as glycerol.

2. Gastrointestinal dynamics drugs: through the excitation of the gastrointestinal tract cholinergic interneurons and intermuscular plexus receptors, to promote the release of acetylcholine, so as to enhance the gastrointestinal smooth muscle peristalsis, effective for chronic transmission constipation. Commonly used drugs are mosapride, itopride and so on.

3. Biofeedback therapy: it is one of the psychotherapeutic methods, using biofeedback technology, through the operation of the conditioned action mechanism, using modern physiological scientific instruments, so that the patients can perceive the functional state of their pelvic floor muscles, so as to guide them to control the pelvic floor muscles, and at the same time, increase the intra-abdominal pressure to realize the defecation of the therapy. It is suitable for some patients with constipation who have pelvic floor dysfunction.

4. Surgical treatment: for patients with chronic transmissible constipation who are not effective in the above treatments, sub-total resection of colon and ileorectal anastomosis can be taken; pelvic floor dystrophy can be treated by resection of part of puborectalis muscle.

If diagnosed with constipation, it is recommended to consult a doctor in a timely manner, standardized treatment under the guidance of the doctor, do not believe in prescriptions, in order to avoid adverse effects.
