What are the symptoms of atrophic rhinitis?

Symptoms of atrophic rhinitis include dryness of the nose and nasopharynx, nasal congestion, nosebleed, headache, olfactory impairment, foul odor and others. 1. Nasal and nasopharyngeal dryness: it is caused by hyperventilation of the nasal cavity, atrophy of the glands of the nasal mucosa, resulting in decreased secretion. 2. Nasal congestion: It is caused by the pus crusts in the nasal cavity blocking the nasal cavity, resulting in air not being able to pass through the nasal cavity, or due to the atrophy of the nasal mucosa and the dullness of the sensory nerves, which can’t detect the passage of air though there is air. 3. Nosebleed: it is caused by atrophy and thinning of nasal mucous membrane or digging the nose to cause capillary damage. 4. Headache: often manifested in forehead, temporal side or occipital headache. 5. Olfactory impairment: the nasal cavity is blocked by pus crusts, resulting in odor molecules can not reach the olfactory region or the olfactory nerve is atrophied, thus leading to the loss of sense of smell. 6. Bad odor: the exhaled gas has a rotten smell, which is caused by the protein decomposition of nasal secretions and crusts by bacteria such as Aspergillus and other bacteria to produce odor indole. 7. Other: when the lesion involves the eustachian tube, it will lead to secretory otitis media, which will cause hearing loss and tinnitus. When it involves the pharynx, irritating dry cough and hoarseness will occur. When the above symptoms occur, patients should go to the hospital for consultation and standardized treatment under the guidance of the doctor.
