Childhood schizophrenia in light of declining academic performance

In the clinic, we sometimes see children brought in by their parents because their academic performance has dropped significantly. There are many reasons for this phenomenon, most of which are due to the child’s own poor attitude toward learning, failure to recognize the importance of learning, poor family education methods, the wrong approach, and the presence of undesirable factors in the school learning environment, the child’s poor adaptation to learning, and poor learning ability. However, there are also a small percentage of children who have special causes, namely the early symptoms of childhood schizophrenia, which should be taken seriously. Schizophrenia is a psychiatric disorder of unknown etiology with characteristic disorders of thinking, perception, emotion, behavior and other aspects. It usually starts in young adulthood, and there is usually no impairment of consciousness or intelligence, and the disease is often delayed. In children and adolescents, because the nervous system is not yet well developed, their cognitive ability to observe and perceive things around them is not as good as that of adults, and their thinking is not yet mature, so the early symptoms of childhood schizophrenia are not necessarily the characteristic schizophrenic symptoms such as typical perceptual and thinking disorders, or symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions, but often manifest as abnormal changes in personality and behavior. The most common of these are changes in academic life. They gradually stop being conscientious and conscientious in their studies and get good grades, but gradually become less conscientious, sloppy in their studies, mentally depressed and inattentive throughout the day. They do not care about the obvious decline in academic performance, they are indifferent and do not seek improvement. Even no longer want to go to school, truant, wandering in the community, causing trouble. At this time, many parents may think that the child’s moral character has problems, but after strengthening the discipline has little effect. Gradually, the child’s symptoms become similar to those of adults, with abnormal speech and behavior, as well as thinking, cognitive and emotional disorders. Treatment is delayed. Therefore, we should pay enough attention to the problem of declining academic performance in children and adolescents, and it is best for parents to patiently and carefully communicate with their children to understand the dynamics of their thoughts and carefully look for the causes. If necessary, seek help from a doctor to rule out possible mental illnesses, seize the opportunity for treatment, and give early treatment to improve the prognosis.
