The central nervous system transmits, stores and processes information, produces various sensations, innervates and controls the behavior of the body, and regulates basic physiological activities. The central nervous system consists of the brain and the spinal cord, which are responsible for integrating information from all parts of the body to form sensations and send out messages to control body movements. The spinal cord serves as a signaling conduit between the brain and the rest of the body, while the spinal cord also provides direct control of simple musculoskeletal reflexes. The brain processes and interprets sensory information sent from the spinal cord and also has the function of coordinating the body. Complex functions, such as thinking and the regulation of sensation, can be performed by different parts of the brain. The central nervous system also regulates basic physiological activities of the body such as breathing, heartbeat, and body temperature. If there is dysfunction in the central nervous system, it will seriously affect the normal functioning of the body and requires prompt medical attention.
