The original Chinese medicine formula for Cynanchum Dai Ochre Tang was 9 grams each of Licorice, Semen Armeniacae, and Cynanchum, 6 grams each of Ginseng and Ochre, 15 grams of Ginger, and 4 jujubes. Ochre Tang is a traditional Chinese medicine formula from “Treatise on Typhoid Fever”, which is a qi regulator. In this formula, Flos Carthamus tinctorius is the king’s medicine, which can reduce rebelliousness, stop belching, and eliminate phlegm by lowering the qi. Ochre stone is good at suppressing rebellious Qi and is the ministerial herb. Ginger can harmonize the stomach and lower the rebellious Qi (harmonize the stomach Qi and bring down the rebellious Qi), help to dispel phlegm and subdue the rebellious Qi. Semixia can dispel phlegm and disperse knots, ginseng, licorice and jujube can benefit the spleen and stomach and tonify Qi deficiency. With the effects of benefiting qi and harmonizing the stomach (tonifying qi to regulate the internal organs of the stomach), lowering rebellious qi and resolving phlegm (correcting rebellious qi and removing phlegm from the body), Codonopsis Ochre Tang is suitable for treating gastric distension and fullness or lumpiness in the stomach and epigastric region due to weak stomach qi and phlegm obstruction, with painless belching and frequent belching, and even accompanied by nausea, poor appetite, eructation, and a white and greasy tongue coating. It is often used to treat gastric dilatation with stomach deficiency and phlegm obstruction, chronic gastritis, and gastric and duodenal ulcers. The formula can be modified according to the patient’s actual condition, and should be used only under the guidance of a TCM practitioner.
