Chronic sinusitis is one of the most common diseases in children and its main symptoms are nasal congestion, runny nose and chronic cough. The examination shows signs such as swelling of the middle turbinate and drainage of pus from the middle nasal passage. For these patients, medication is preferred, supplemented by nasal washings and physiotherapy, etc. If this is not effective, surgical treatment can be considered. The efficacy of traditional functional endoscopic sinus surgery is clear, but it is invasive and not suitable for all pediatric patients, especially those of low age. The answer is yes, and that is sinus balloon dilation. This technique involves inserting a small, flexible balloon into the sinus passages under the guidance of a nasal endoscope, using the expansion of the balloon to restore the inflamed or occluded passages to their original size or slightly larger, allowing air to enter the sinuses smoothly, and flushing the sinus cavity with saline to achieve the goal of treatment. Studies have shown that this procedure can successfully widen the sinus openings in all patients without causing complications or adverse effects. Pre- and post-operative CT scans, multi-angle endoscopy and gross examination have confirmed the safety of the technique. The technique is minimally invasive and safe; it requires no tissue removal and is less destructive to tissue; less intraoperative bleeding, less postoperative pain and swelling; less painful and faster recovery, this treatment greatly reduces patient pain compared to typical sinus surgery. Patients can usually resume normal activities within 24 hours after surgery. Our department is one of the first units in China to carry out sinus balloon dilation for the treatment of chronic sinusitis in children, and has achieved good results. For those patients with recurrent sinusitis that cannot be cured for a long time and have indications for surgery, but do not want to “operate”, this “non-invasive” surgical method can be used.
