What is the significance of high cystatin C

Cystatin C, an indicator of glomerular filtration, is elevated in the presence of abnormal renal function.
Cystatin C is a non-glycosylated basic protein that is expressed by most nucleated cells in the body and is secreted at a constant rate every day, and can freely pass through the glomerular filtration membrane, with an adult serum reference value of 0.6-2.5 mg/L. When glomerular dysfunction occurs, the excretion of cystatin C is impaired, and then the serum cystatin C is elevated.
Blood creatinine, urea, glomerular filtration rate, renal ultrasound, urinalysis, urine protein, etc. can be further investigated for a comprehensive assessment to determine the disease and its stage.
For those with high cystatin C, it is recommended to go to nephrology department of regular hospital for further examination, and the doctor will give diagnosis and treatment after comprehensive evaluation.
