Kidney stones do not have to be confirmed by CT scan. Large kidney stones can be seen on abdominal X-ray, as for X-ray negative stones and small kidney stones a CT scan of the abdomen is required for confirmation. Large kidney stones and positive stones can be seen on abdominal X-ray as dense, high-density shadows of varying sizes and shapes. Negative stones and small kidney stones can not be shown on the X-ray film, CT can be done to clarify their size, shape and location, and also a preliminary determination of their composition. In addition to surgical treatment, even if the location of the stone can be seen on the abdominal X-ray, further CT examination is still needed in order to formulate a surgical plan. CT examination can provide more detailed information for kidney stone examination, but compared with X-ray, CT radiation is higher and the cost is higher, so it is recommended to take the appropriate examination method according to the doctor’s recommendation in order to carry out the next step of diagnosis and treatment.
