What kind of multiple myeloma also requires surgery?

Multiple myeloma is a common tumor of the hematological system. Clinically, it mostly presents with bone destruction and bone pain as the first manifestation, often with bone lesions, and even as the main clinical problem. Chemotherapy is the main treatment for multiple myeloma, but clinically, because myeloma mostly occurs in the spine, pelvis and femur, it is easy to cause compression pathological fractures and paraplegia, etc. In such cases, surgery should be performed. It is generally considered that surgical treatment should be performed in the following cases: 1. Pathological fractures of the spine with secondary instability. 2. intravertebral masses. 3, compression of the spinal cord by a vertebral or accessory mass. 4. The mass is huge, in order to reduce the tumor load and make chemotherapy more effective. The purpose of surgery is not to eradicate the tumor, but to stabilize the spine, release the spinal cord compression, and restore the function of the spinal cord, so that the patient can recover the sensation and motor function of both lower limbs and the function of the second stool, thus improving the quality of life. In addition, it also enables the spine to bear weight, which can restore the functions of walking and weight-bearing and avoid the appearance of fractures. Our experience shows that chemotherapy with surgery can indeed improve patients’ quality of life, increase their confidence in overcoming the disease, and allow them to live with dignity.
