Burst fractures are usually associated with displacement of the fracture fragments within the spinal canal and spinal nerve injury with corresponding neurologic symptoms. Normally, the treatment is surgical and involves a posterior approach with a nail-rod system to open up the vertebral plate and expose the nerves and provide a decompression. Under normal circumstances, some postoperative rehabilitation is needed, such as local physical therapy and functional exercises for both lower limbs, as well as massage for both lower limbs, to promote nerve recovery and prevent deep vein thrombosis and muscle atrophy. Acupuncture and electro-acupuncture are also necessary in the postoperative period.
