What should I expect after a gastroscopy?

After the examination the patient sits up and spits out saliva. Since some air is injected during the examination, although it has been aspirated when retiring the mirror, some people still have a feeling of abdominal distension and belching a lot. Because the pain-relieving effect has not disappeared, eating too early can easily make food enter the trachea causing choking or aspiration pneumonia. Therefore, 2 hours after the examination, try to eat liquid food after the effect of pharyngeal has disappeared. Within 1-4 days, patients may feel discomfort or pain in the pharynx, but there is no hindrance to eating and drinking. Most people can work as usual, and those who are more ill can be given rest, and drivers cannot drive alone on that day. It is best to have a family member accompany the gastroscopy and escort them home after the examination. Patients who have had a biopsy (especially the elderly) should eat a semi-liquid diet for 1-2 days after the examination, avoiding raw, cold, hard and irritating foods. Smoking, drinking alcohol, tea and coffee are prohibited to avoid inducing bleeding on the wound surface. After gastroscopy, pay attention to whether there is black stool (tarry or asphalt-like, which is a phenomenon of upper gastrointestinal bleeding), if there is black stool, go to the hospital and ask the doctor to deal with it in time.
