Causes of blepharoplasty opening obstruction

Obstruction of the opening of the lid gland is caused by the degeneration of the lid gland and by the abnormal composition of the lipids in the lid gland secretions, with elevated cholesterol esters and free fatty acids, resulting in a sticky secretion. Obstruction of the lid opening is common in older adults with oily skin and is characterized by a yellow or yellow-white greasy, granular substance at the opening of the lid gland that blocks the opening of the lid gland and causes a sensation of foreign body, dryness, irritation, and visual fatigue. Blockage of the lid opening can be treated by applying heat to the eyelid and then massaging the lid gland to unblock the lid ducts, which requires multiple treatments. Topical diclofenac sodium drops and polyvinyl alcohol drops are applied to the eye after unblocking and are reviewed regularly.
