I. Initial consultation
Ms. Sun, 25 years old, came to our hospital for the first time and spoke with a serious nasal sound, sneezing or blowing her nose from time to time, but it was not easy to blow her nose out. Ms. Sun said she was allergic to pollen, and her nose had been poorly ventilated after exposure to pollen a few months ago, and she also felt dizziness, headache, loss of smell, and poor sleep quality at night. I checked her nasal cavity and found more nasal crusts. Ms. Sun may have developed chronic hypertrophic rhinitis due to allergic allergic rhinitis but had not been treated in time.
 
II. Treatment
After the diagnosis of chronic hypertrophic rhinitis was confirmed by anterior rhinoscopy, 0.9% sodium chloride injection was given to clean the nasal crust in Ms. Sun’s nasal cavity and promote nasal ventilation. Through 1 week of medication to observe whether Ms. Sun’s symptoms improved, she was regularly instructed to wash her nasal cavity with 0.9% sodium chloride injection during the medication period to promote the discharge of secretions to increase comfort.
III. Treatment effect
After 1 week of standardized medication treatment, Ms. Sun reported that her nasal sound disappeared, her nasal discharge was no longer sticky and she could blow it out better, but recently the symptoms of runny nose improved significantly, and she no longer sneezed. Considering the better effect of medication, then the nasal mucosa congestion and edema as well as the symptoms of turbinate hypertrophy were found to disappear through the anterior nasal microscopy.
IV. Notes
We are glad that Ms. Sun’s discomfort has improved significantly, but we still need to advise her to take good care of her nasal cavity in daily life and not to pick her nose to avoid infection induced by unhygienic hands. Don’t contact with allergens and pay attention to blowing the nose on one side each time, not on both sides at the same time; pay attention to supplementing foods with high nutritional value, such as beef, pork, chicken, milk and eggs, which can provide the body with rich protein, vitamins and carbohydrates and enhance the body’s ability to resist diseases.
V. Personal insight
Chronic hypertrophic rhinitis can be caused by allergies, lack of vitamin C, upper respiratory tract infections and other causes. In this case, Ms. Sun was allergic to pollen and had a reaction in the nasal cavity, but she was not treated in time. Therefore, it is recommended to seek medical attention promptly when suspicious symptoms such as nasal congestion, heavy nasal sounds and loss of smell occur.
