Although there are no drugs that can reverse the cognitive function of Alzheimer’s patients, Alzheimer’s disease is not incurable, and medication can improve the symptoms and slow down the disease process. 1.Cholinesterase inhibitors: Cholinesterase inhibitors can be used to treat mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease by enhancing the activity of enzymes and improving the metabolism of brain tissue, strengthening the synthesis and metabolism of neurotransmitters to restore brain function and information transmission, or improving the blood flow supply and the utilization of oxygen and glucose by brain cells, thus reducing the damage to the brain caused by pathogenic factors. If one drug is ineffective or has large adverse reactions, it can be replaced by another one, which may still have certain efficacy. 2.NMDA receptor antagonists: such as memantine; for patients with moderate to severe dementia, memantine (10mg each time, twice a day) can be added for combined treatment, which can effectively improve cognitive function and daily living ability, and the incidence of adverse effects of this drug is low. 3.Other drugs: Ginkgo biloba extract, brain metabolism activator piracetam, olanzapine, etc.; calcium channel antagonist nimodipine, etc. and brain protein hydrolysate, vitamin E. The evidence for the benefit of the above drugs is inconsistent and can be used appropriately as synergistic adjuvants after weighing the pros and cons. In 2018, a new drug for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, mannosylate (GV-971), jointly developed by Ocean University of China, Shanghai Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Shanghai Green Valley Pharmaceuticals, successfully completed a clinical phase 3 trial of GV-971, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 36-week study in China. The results of the 36-week, placebo-controlled study showed that GV-971 met expectations in key efficacy indicators of cognitive improvement, with statistically significant and clinically meaningful results. This drug is an oligosaccharide compound extracted from marine organisms and is a new drug developed by China, which is expected to be a milestone in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. The treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, in addition to the above drugs to improve cognitive function, also requires daily careful care, scientific nursing, timely symptomatic treatment such as anti-anxiety, anti-depression, prevention and control of infections, pressure sores, malnutrition and other complications.
