Cerebellar ataxia has many causes, such as heredity, infection, poisoning, traumatic brain injury, cerebrovascular disease, tumor, etc. It is usually difficult for patients to return to normal walking, and in the later stage, it is prone to abnormalities and even mobility problems, which will have a certain negative impact on daily life.
Cerebellar ataxia is mainly caused by abnormal lesions in the cerebellum leading to limb motor function control disorders, which is related to heredity, infection, poisoning, traumatic brain injury, cerebrovascular diseases, tumors, and can lead to the phenomenon of abnormal walking posture. Since the cerebellar lesions are irreversible, cerebellar ataxia cannot be fully recovered, so it is difficult to resume normal walking.
In the early stages of cerebellar ataxia, neurotrophic medications, such as gangliosides, can be used as prescribed by the doctor. In the later stages, the patient can improve the function of the limbs as much as possible, such as improving the gait and self-care ability, through the methods of exercise rehabilitation and occupational rehabilitation.
Since the patient’s balance stability is relatively poor, attention should be paid to the prevention of falls and other accidents in the course of rehabilitation training.
