Many of my patients and friends have asked me why the painkillers for migraine headaches are not working the more they are taken. We migraine patients also have this feeling in our daily life. Patients who have painkillers that don’t work have one common characteristic: they have a history of migraine for many years and have frequent headache attacks. The painkillers are effective at first, but when they are not taken, the headache worsens, so the painkillers have to be used in higher and higher doses. We call this drug-dependent headache or drug abuse headache. The main reason why taking painkillers can relieve headache when headache attacks occur is that painkillers have different degrees of effects on the central nervous system. If painkillers are taken for a long time or in large quantities, the painkilling mechanism existing in the central nervous system itself will be gradually weakened, and instead, pain hypersensitivity may occur, and even slight external stimuli may trigger or aggravate the occurrence of migraine, and migraine attacks will occur more frequently and to a more serious extent, so that A physical and psychological dependence on painkillers is formed. In this case, the patient may be able to relieve the pain for a short period of time by increasing the dose or the number of times of taking the medication, but a vicious cycle is formed for a long time, and the headache will become more and more severe, which is often very painful and seriously affects the quality of life and work. It can be seen that taking painkillers can be as addictive as smoking and drinking, which are common among us. Therefore, in order to prevent the occurrence of such cases, I suggest that patients who have just developed headaches should not rush to take medication to control them at first, but can think back whether their headaches are affected by their recent diet, or weather changes, or recent emotional ups and downs. Patients with chronic headaches are advised to go to the hospital in time to confirm what kind of headache they are suffering from, because there are many kinds of headaches and different kinds of headaches have different treatments, so it is important to determine what kind of headache is causing the problem before prescribing the right medicine. Do not buy medication on your own to treat yourself.
