The usual approach of western medicine for upper limb edema after breast cancer surgery is to use cuff compression to reduce the swelling, but it is easy to be repeated. Dr. Guo Zhizhong of Henan Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine successfully solved this problem by using traditional Chinese medicine and other therapies. Ms. Zhang from Shandong, who is in her fifties, suffered from breast cancer six years ago and developed edema in her arm after surgery. Under the doctor’s advice, she used cuff compression to reduce the swelling, but the effect was very unsatisfactory. When she came to me, Ms. Zhang’s arm was swollen like a calf, and the swelling and pain were unbearable. In the “Traditional Chinese Medicine Characteristic Treatment Room” of Oncology Department 1, I put Chinese herbal ointment on Auntie Zhang’s swollen arm, and combined it with puncture and bloodletting, cupping and oral Chinese medicine. A few days later, the swelling of her arm went down significantly. After the symptoms were completely relieved, the treatment was consolidated for another month, and Ms. Zhang, who had suffered from swelling and pain for more than five years, finally got rid of her pain. Early breast cancer surgical treatment is mainly based on surgical excision, and the clearance of axillary lymph nodes during surgery cuts off the lymphatic fluid return path of the upper limbs, resulting in lymphatic fluid return obstacle and stagnation in the arm, which leads to arm swelling and pain; at the same time, lymphatic fluid return obstacle easily leads to decreased immunity, local inflammation and fibrosis, which further aggravates the edema of the arm and seriously affects the quality of life. Cuff compression to reduce swelling is effective, but easy to repeat. Chinese medicine has good curative effect and can help patients to reduce swelling after breast cancer surgery. After breast cancer surgery, most of breast cancer patients suffer from deficiency of qi and blood, blood stasis and obstruction of collaterals, resulting in water stagnation and blood stasis in the upper limbs, which leads to swelling and pain. Adopting traditional Chinese medicine external compresses which can replenish qi and blood, dissolve blood stasis and reduce swelling, together with oral intake of traditional Chinese medicine, puncture bloodletting and cupping have very good effect. The specific method of external application is as follows: 15 grams of cinnamon sticks, 20 grams of poria, 20 grams of turmeric, 15 grams of atractylodes macrocephala, 15 grams of angelica sinensis, 30 grams of astragalus, 30 grams of safflower, 30 grams of peony, 30 grams of hyssop, 15 grams of zedoary, and 6 grams of licorice. Powdered medicine, vinegar, honey mixed into a char, external compresses in the swollen parts, each external compress 24 to 36 hours, after 12 hours of rest for the next external compresses, the symptoms are relieved and then consolidate the treatment for one month to prevent recurrence.
