The relationship between obesity and diabetes

Obesity and diabetes are also familiar to us, obesity is now overweight or obese in 1 out of 4 people in China. Diabetes is a common disease and has become the second killer of modern diseases, which is second only to cancer in terms of harm to the human body. The number of diabetic patients in China is increasing year by year, which is a serious threat to human health. But for the relationship between obesity and diabetes, many people are not clear. In fact, obesity and diabetes have a kind of “love and kill” between the “sisterhood”, they are called “sister disease”. Research shows that obesity is one of the important risk factors for the occurrence of type 2 diabetes, and the prevalence of diabetes increases significantly in people who are obese for a long time, up to four times as much as the general population. On the other hand, in type 2 diabetic patients, 60% are obese people. Moreover, the longer the time of obesity, the greater the chance of diabetes. Also, the risk of diabetes for people with abdominal type obesity is much greater than for people with hip type obesity, because the waist-to-hip ratio (the ratio of waist circumference/hip circumference) is proportional to the incidence of diabetes, which means that people with large waists and small hips have a greater chance of developing diabetes, and people with large bellies should be more cautious. Why are obese people prone to diabetes? The fundamental reason is that there is a special pathological state in the body of obese people called insulin resistance. Early obese insulin secretion function is still normal, but due to insulin resistance, the efficiency of insulin action is reduced. In order to overcome insulin resistance, the pancreas will synthesize a large amount of insulin, causing the blood insulin level of obese people to be much higher than that of ordinary people, which is called “hyperinsulinemia”. In the early stage of obesity, it is possible to maintain blood glucose in the normal range through hyperinsulinemia, and then it is possible that the function of the pancreas to synthesize insulin will gradually fail due to overwork, and the insulin production will gradually be insufficient to lower blood glucose to the normal range, and then there will be overt diabetes. Therefore, obesity is very easy to cause diabetes. It is important to note that effective weight loss can prevent the onset of diabetes or significantly reduce the degree of diabetes. For now, weight loss surgery is the only way to achieve long-term and stable weight loss in moderately to severely obese people, achieving the goal of complete remission and long-term remission of diabetes. After more than 10 years of development, the number of cases of obesity and type 2 diabetes treated by weight loss surgery in China has been increasing year by year, showing a good development trend. It has been proved that weight loss surgery for diabetes is not a marketing gimmick, but a good weapon to solve the “love and hate” feud between obesity and diabetes.
