Cannot.
The thyroid gland is located in the anterior part of the neck, on the anterolateral aspect of the esophagus, whereas the gastroscope is an endoscope of the digestive tract that enters the stomach through the interior of the esophagus, so it cannot visualize the thyroiditis.
The thyroid gland is located on the deep side of the neck under the skin in the muscles of the cervical latissimus dorsi and sternocleidomastoid. The thyroid gland has left and right lobes and isthmus, the isthmus is located directly in front of the trachea and the two lobes are located lateral to the trachea and esophagus. Thus the thyroid gland is located on the outside of the esophagus.
Thyroiditis, including acute thyroiditis and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, is examined and diagnosed mainly on the basis of thyroid ultrasound and thyroid function.
Gastroscopy is an endoscopy of the gastrointestinal tract, which goes from the mouth into the pharynx, larynx, esophagus, and ultimately into the stomach for observation, tissue biopsy, and so on. Therefore, the gastroscope will only be inside the esophagus, and cannot see the thyroid gland outside the esophagus, nor can it observe thyroiditis.
It is recommended that patients with thyroiditis seek timely medical attention, consult a specialist, and follow the doctor’s instructions for examination and treatment.
