Ankle fractures do not readily displace after one month.
The hematoma inflammatory mechanization phase is completed within 2 weeks after ankle fracture, while the formation of fibrous junctions begins, allowing the ankle joint to gain initial stability.
Treatment after ankle fracture is divided into conservative and surgical treatment. Conservative treatment involves external immobilization of the fractured ankle in a cast for a period of 4 to 6 weeks after the fracture has been reset. In well-grown ankle fractures, the cast can be removed after 4 weeks for partial weight-bearing.
Surgically treated ankle fractures can be partially weight-bearing after 4 to 6 weeks. The fact that the fractured ankle can be walked on means that the fractured part of the ankle is firmly fixed and will not be displaced.
