Is thalassemia beta serious?

The main types of thalassemia are alpha, beta, delta beta, and delta delta. beta thalassemia can be classified into mild, intermediate, and severe according to the severity of the symptoms. beta thalassemia mild and intermediate are not serious, while the condition of severe is more serious. The mild and intermediate types are mostly seen in adults, and except for easy fatigue, mild anemia, and slightly enlarged spleen, the symptoms are generally not obvious and not life-threatening. Intermediate patients have symptoms between the light and heavy types, with less severe symptoms, and can often survive into adulthood. Patients with the severe form are usually found in infants and young children, and usually present with diarrhea, slow growth and poor appetite at 6 months of age. They may have fatigue, lethargy (lack of appetite and reduced food intake), low-grade fever, headache, etc. In the later stage of life, they may appear to have a pale face and enlarged spleen, and usually rely on blood transfusion to survive. If the patient has anemia, it is recommended to go to the hematology department of regular hospitals for detailed investigation of the cause of anemia and timely treatment.
