Does Tiger Balm heal or harm the liver?

Tiger Balm is the dried rhizome and roots of Polygonum tinctorium, slightly bitter flavor, slightly cold in nature. It belongs to the liver meridian, gallbladder meridian, lung meridian. It has the effects of inducing dampness and removing jaundice, dispersing blood stasis and relieving pain, clearing heat and removing toxins, relieving cough and resolving phlegm.
It is used in treating damp-heat jaundice, rheumatism paralysis (joint pain caused by wind-cold-dampness), bandhida, lung-heat cough, carbuncle, swelling, sore and poison (generalized refers to the skin diseases caused by stagnation of qi and blood due to the invasion of poisonous evils), menstrual occlusion, scalded by fire and water, obstruction in the abdomen, bruises, etc. It is also used in treating the pain and swelling of the skin.
The pharmacopoeia does not clearly indicate the adverse effects of Tiger Balm, and there is no literature or research pointing out that this product can cause liver injury, and it will not injure the liver under normal use according to the doctor’s instructions. Pregnant women are forbidden to take Tiger Balm.
