The effect of alcohol on fracture recovery

Drinking alcohol can affect fracture healing because it can impair microcirculation at the fracture site, causing constriction or spasm of the small blood vessels in the microcirculation, which can reduce the blood supply to the fracture site. Sometimes there can be thrombosis of the small blood vessels that interrupt the blood supply to the fracture, which can lead to inadequate growth and repair of the fracture site and seriously affect the healing of the fracture. In addition, fracture healing may sometimes be delayed or even non-healing. Therefore, alcohol is prohibited during the healing period of the fracture, as well as smoking, because cigarettes can also disrupt the microcirculation of the fracture. Alcohol should be started only after it is clear that the fracture is healing.
