According to the Ministry of Health’s “Technical Specification for Newborn Hearing Screening”, the initial screening of newborns should be completed from 48 hours after birth to the time of discharge, and those who fail and those who miss screening should be re-screened in both ears within 42 days. Those who do not pass the re-screening should be referred to a hearing impairment clinic designated by the provincial health administrative department for further diagnosis within 3 months of birth. Children diagnosed with permanent hearing impairment should undergo appropriate clinical and audiological interventions within 6 months of birth. Many parents may ask why hearing screening should be done after their child is asleep. In fact, the main purpose is to ensure the accuracy of the screening results. In addition, to ensure that the screening is carried out smoothly, the assistance and cooperation of the parents before, during and after the hearing screening plays an important role. What should parents do to cooperate with the doctor? Specifically, three aspects can be explained before, during and after the screening. Pre-screening: 1. Listen carefully to the screening staff’s explanation of the meaning and methods of hearing screening; read and sign the informed consent form carefully; 2. The best test results are obtained when the baby is in a natural sleep state. If the baby is irritable or crying, it will affect the test result, so before the hearing test, parents should feed the baby as much as possible to make him/her sleep. 3, change the baby’s diaper to make him/her comfortable without crying. 4, choose the right thickness for the baby, thin is easy to get cold, too thick will affect the operation. During the screening: 1. Keep quiet and avoid talking; turn off all communication devices to avoid noise; 2. Keep the baby in the correct position for the screening, exposing the test ear and avoiding covering it; 3. Parents can gently hold their hands on the baby’s shoulders during the test to make him/her feel safe; 4. After doing one side of the ear, do not flip the baby hard to avoid waking up, but cooperate with the doctor to gently flip to the opposite ear. After screening: 1.Listen carefully to the doctor’s explanation, if you do not pass the screening, follow the doctor’s instructions; 2.Children with high risk of hearing loss should receive hearing monitoring every 6 months until 3 weeks of age; 3.Children who pass the screening should receive regular hearing care from the pediatrician; 4.Pay attention to the prevention of noise, drugs and other damage to the baby’s hearing; 5.Pay attention to the observation of the baby’s hearing and speech development, if there is suspicion of developmental delay. If there is a suspicion of developmental delay, seek timely medical consultation to exclude it.
